Telling people you read tarot always gets a reaction – good or bad. There are many misconceptions about it, and many different ways of looking at and using it.
I use the tarot to help people. It started out as a hobby – a dabbling in the unknown – and quickly grew into a way of life that allowed me to see things in myself (of which I wasn’t otherwise fully aware), and make changes in my life for the better.
I am not a psychic, or a medium. I cannot read minds, see a future that’s set in stone, or communicate with the dead. I just read tarot. And to me, the tarot is simply a deck of cards – but it’s also a tool that works with the subconscious mind to draw one’s attention to thoughts, circumstances, and feelings that need to be addressed. I use the tarot much like a psychologist uses therapy to understand and heal – to uncover the dark corners of our subconscious and tackle what we find. Though I am far from a licensed therapist, I believe it’s the profession I would have chosen, had creative writing not taken hold of me. Writing is a therapeutic practice, and tarot is much the same; like all my vocations, the cards are a gift worth sharing.
Tarot reading is a skill that takes time to develop; I still consider myself a student in many ways (just as a psychologist is a student of the mind, or a biologist is a student of life). Like any profession, tarot reading is as much a learning process as it is a service. We all make mistakes. And we all learn from them.
I am not the solution to all your problems, or anyone else’s – but I do the best I can with the tools I have, as any professional would. And in my experience, this practice has been more than rewarding.
