Word Parade Books is a small, independent literary press I founded in 2009, upon much soul-searching and rumination on the joy of quality literature.  As Editor-in-Chief, my first (and thus far, only) act was to eagerly publish the manuscript for this book.  And I’m so glad I did, because the editing and design process was both a fun and invaluable experience.  Having known Matthieu Pierce and his poetry for many years, I was sure this chapbook – which is very close to my heart – would be nothing short of remarkable.  Lo and behold…I was right.

Some Cold, Bright, Old-Fashioned Facts is a chapbook of vivid, whimsical poems riddled with colorful characters, objects, and phenomena.  Through imaginative leaps and musings on the likes of spaceships, crickets, and scarecrows, Pierce explores life’s trials and joys with keen observation and an unwavering sense of wonder.

From the back cover:

“Reading Some Cold, Bright, Old-Fashioned Facts is a sensual and intellectual thrill.  Pierce is a poet tuned to the magic of music, wit, and imagination.  He takes on a playful array of subjects, and whether he is writing about an abandoned spaceship, the advent of puberty, pugilists, or picnicking on tombstones, his poems are fresh, provocative, and richly textured. Each image, each cadence offers bountiful satisfactions and surprises.  Every poem sparkles.”

Joy Passanante
author of Sinning in Italy

“Matthieu Pierce’s poems inhabit a world in which both mundane and weary realities are transformed into the whimsical and the delicate. Lying beneath his inventive language and surprising juxtapositions is also an evocation to ward off the threatening aspects of contemporary life.  In an unpredictable terrain, these poems are amulets against the ordinary ways of seeing and being.”

author of White Sea
